Imagine arriving at home and there are ten assailants waiting for you… This may be a moment for your final prayers or if you have a flair for the dramatic, you may feel “They will never take me alive.” Yet, in modern society, we face battles of insurmountable odds on a regular basis.
Throughout history, there have been countless examples of individuals and groups facing seemingly insurmountable odds and coming out victorious. One such example is the Battle of Agincourt, fought in October 1415 in Northern France.
On one side stood 6,000 to 9,000 English soldiers, led by King Henry V, who were vastly outnumbered by a French force of 20,000 to 30,000, including around 10,000 heavily armoured knights and men-at-arms. Despite the odds, the English were able to secure a decisive victory.
So how did they do it? This is a question that is foremost in my mind as I prepared for book 5 in my medieval fantasy series.
One important factor was preparation.
Even during negotiations between the two countries in 1413, King Henry was already preparing for war, stockpiling armour-piercing arrows in the Tower of London. Similarly, in our own battles, whether they be financial struggles, self-doubt, or physical challenges, it’s important to take the time to prepare ourselves mentally and physically.
Another key factor was resilience.
The English soldiers wore steel plate armour that was stronger than their opponents, and they also carried a more powerful bow. This is a reminder that we can always find ways to fortify ourselves, whether that be through learning new skills, finding ways to calm our minds, or embracing new technologies.
Adaptability was also crucial.
The French underestimated the devastating effects that the English bow would have on their army, and the English were able to adapt and make the most of their strengths. In our own battles, it’s important to be open to change and willing to pivot when necessary.
The Battle of Agincourt is a reminder that even in the face of seemingly impossible odds, with the right preparation, resilience, and adaptability, we can overcome. Let us take inspiration from the past and use it to fuel our own battles, for whatever they may be.
